Wildlife
The Wineglass Bay Cruise
Tasmania has over 5,000 kilometres of coastline and one of the most biologically diverse marine environments in the world. Our seas are teeming with life, and many of our species are found nowhere else in the world.Tasmania’s cool temperate waters support an abundance of fish species, which in turn supports populations of sea birds and larger marine mammals including seals, dolphins, and seasonally migrating whales.
Species which have been sighted on our cruises include:
•
Abundant seabirds including Australasian gannets, cormorants, gulls, crested and Caspian terns, and short-tailed shearwaters
• Albatross—including the shy, yellow-nosed and wandering albatross
• White-bellied sea eagles
• Wedge tailed eagles
• Little penguins
• Bottlenose and common dolphins
• Australian fur seals
• Migrating humpback and southern right whales
Orca (killer whales) are occasionally sighted and we have had the privilege of encountering a rare blue whale—a treasured moment for all guests and crew.
Freycinet Sea Cruises is committed to the conservation of this extraordinary environment through monitoring our threatened and endangered wildlife.
On every Wineglass Bay Cruise, wildlife sightings are recorded and later added to our database. Every few months we send our records to the Tasmanian Nature Conservation Branch to assist them in monitoring unique species of marine mammals and birdlife.
We offer all our passengers the opportunity to be a part of this important work by inviting you to contribute your sightings to this ongoing study.
Rastus

Rastus likes to make sure everyone feels at home on his boat and will personally make his way around the boat to get a pat from each and every guest he has on board. He is perhaps one of the most photographed dogs in Tassie and will always pose for a picture.
